Business vs Personal Bank Accounts for Rental Income
7 min read

Income, deposits, repair bills. Most accounts put them in one balance. Here are ten accounts for real estate investors, what each does well, and what to check before you open one.
If your property earns income, your account does more than hold money. It takes payments in, holds deposits until they're due back, and pays for repairs.
Most accounts give you one balance for all of it. A few let you organize funds with sub-accounts. Of the ten below, only one has AI bookkeeping.
We compared options for real estate investors, whether you hold property in your own name or your company's, on each provider's own pages as of 15 October 2026.

Every other option on this list gives you a balance, and some give you a few more. None of them has AI bookkeeping, so what each property earned, spent and holds is still worked out by hand at tax time. With Roofteller, each property's income, deposits and reserves sit in their own accounts, the money you hold earns interest in the same place, and AI automates your bookkeeping. Our setup guide shows how to structure them across several properties.
What is the best bank account for a real estate investor?
It depends on what you need it to do. If you want each property's money apart, with AI that automates your bookkeeping, that's Roofteller. If you want a large bank with real estate loans, look at Sterling, Access, GTBank, First Bank, Zenith and UBA. If you want a free app with no cap on what you receive, look at Kuda and Moniepoint.
Should property income go into a personal or a company account?
If you own the property in your own name, a personal account works. If a company owns it, the income belongs in the company's account. Our guide to business vs personal accounts explains the difference.
Can I open an account from abroad?
Yes. Most of these accounts open online, so you don't need to visit a branch. You need your BVN and NIN, and you can get a BVN from abroad through the non-resident BVN. Roofteller opens online with your BVN and NIN, wherever you live.
Which accounts pay interest on money I'm holding?
Most banks pay interest on savings accounts, not on current or business accounts. The CBN sets a minimum savings rate, but it falls away in any month you make more than four withdrawals. Apps pay interest on savings plans inside the app. With Roofteller, idle funds earn up to 12% a year in an interest account under the property, next to its income and deposits.
Provider details are taken from each provider's published pages as of 15 October 2026 and may have changed. Confirm fees and rates with the provider before you open an account.
